Funeral support and standards

Funeral Director Code of Practice

The Funeral Director Code of Practice sets clear standards for funeral directors across Scotland. It started on 1 March 2025 and makes sure that every funeral is carried out with dignity and respect. If you are arranging a funeral, you can trust that your loved one will be cared for properly. The Code applies to all funeral directors working in Scotland, so no matter where you live, the same quality of service is guaranteed. It’s designed to give families peace of mind and to ensure everyone gets a respectful farewell.

What does the Code cover?

The Code explains exactly how funeral directors should look after the deceased and support families. It covers how bodies are cared for, how staff behave, and the way funerals are organised. Funeral directors must follow these rules, so you can expect kindness, professionalism, and good standards at every step.

How does it help you?

If you’re planning a funeral, the Code makes things simpler. You can ask your funeral director about the standards they follow. If you’re unhappy with any part of the service, you have the right to raise your concerns, knowing that there are clear rules in place to protect you and your loved one.
