Taxi/private hire car driver's licence
Taxi/private hire car driver's licence
If you want to drive a taxi or private hire car, you need a licence from us. This page explains what you need to know before you apply, the difference between licences, and the steps you must take. You can view our film about driving taxis and private hire cars on YouTube.
Before you apply
Driving can be flexible, but it may not suit everyone. We recommend you speak to existing drivers or try the work first to understand what it involves.
Think about where you want to work:
- taxi licences are limited in Hamilton, East Kilbride, and Rutherglen/Cambuslang. All are currently issued. You may be able to buy an existing licence from a current owner
- there is no limit on taxi licences in Clydesdale
- there is no limit on private hire vehicle licences
Taxi or private hire: what’s the difference?
- Taxis can pick up passengers on the street or at ranks
- Private hire cars must be pre-booked. You cannot pick up passengers without a booking or look for fares on the street
- you must hold the correct driver’s licence for the type of vehicle. A private hire licence does not allow you to drive a taxi.
Route test and badge
You must pass a route test before we can grant your licence. This checks your knowledge of local roads and routes.
Once you pass, you do not need to take the test again if you renew your licence before it expires.
When your application is approved, we will issue your driver’s badge.
Wheelchair access in taxis and private hire cars
Drivers of accessible vehicles must help passengers travel safely and comfortably, at no extra cost, under the Equality Act 2010.
For drivers who are not able to give physical assistance due to a medical condition or disability, you can apply for an exemption.
If a driver does not have an exemption and does not meet their duties, they are committing an offence.
