Adult road safety education

Staying safe on the roads

We provide road safety advice and campaigns to help adults stay safe on the roads. This includes guidance for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and other road users. You can use this page to learn about common risks and how to reduce them in everyday situations.

Drink and drug driving

Alcohol and drugs can seriously affect your driving. Even a small amount can slow your reactions, affect your judgement and increase your risk of a crash.

If you drink, do not drive. Alcohol can stay in your system longer than you expect, including the next morning. There is no quick way to reduce its effects.

Drugs, including some medicines, can also make driving unsafe. Always check the label or speak to a pharmacist or doctor before driving. Never mix alcohol with medication and then drive.

Older road users

As we get older, changes in health, eyesight and reaction time can affect how we use the road. This can increase the risk of accidents.

You can stay safe by:

  • keeping your vehicle well maintained
  • checking how medicines affect you
  • taking extra care in busy or poor weather conditions
  • reviewing your driving regularly

Older pedestrians and cyclists should also take extra care.

Driving near horses

Horses can be easily frightened by traffic, noise and sudden movements.

When driving near horses:

  • slow down and pass wide
  • avoid loud noises or sudden movements
  • be patient and prepared to stop

Riders should wear protective clothing and high visibility items to stay safe.

New drivers and families

If you are a new driver, take time to build experience and confidence. Avoid distractions and stay aware of the risks of alcohol and drugs.

Parents can support new drivers by talking about safe driving habits and helping them build skills gradually.

Cycling safely

Cycling is a great way to stay active and travel. To stay safe:

  • wear appropriate safety gear
  • use a well-maintained bike
  • follow road rules
  • plan safe routes
