Road safety calendar competition

Calendar competition information and results

We run a road safety calendar competition each year for schools across South Lanarkshire. Pupils design artwork based on key road safety themes, helping them learn how to stay safe while travelling. Winning designs appear in our annual calendar, which we share with schools and selected offices.

2026 competition results

We received 2,488 entries from 86 schools. Thank you to everyone who took part.

The overall winner is Sophie Kirkland, a Primary 6 pupil from Stonehouse Primary School. Her design includes the message: “Make the right choice… Choose a safe place to cross!”

Sophie’s artwork features on the front of the 2026 calendar. She received £100, a trophy, a certificate and a large print of her design. Stonehouse Primary School will also hold the school trophy for the year.

Competition themes

Each year group explored a different road safety topic:

  • Primary 1 and 2: Walking and wheeling
  • Primary 3 and 4: Seatbelt safety
  • Primary 5 and 6: Safe places to cross
  • Primary 7: Safe and active journeys
  • Secondary 1 to 6: Speed awareness

Prizes and recognition

We award prizes to first, second and third place winners in each year group. We also give highly commended certificates to pupils whose work stands out for creativity and strong safety messages.

How judging works

A panel made up of road safety partners, council staff and transport specialists reviews all entries and selects the winners.

Where to see the designs

You can view all the winning artwork in our 2026 road safety calendar directory. The printed calendar is also shared with schools and at selected office locations.
