Taxi/private hire car driver's licence
After you get your taxi or private hire vehicle licence
Once your vehicle is licensed, you must keep it safe, roadworthy and up to date with all required tests. This helps protect passengers and keeps your licence valid. Please see the taxi testing page.
Vehicle testing
We test all taxi and private hire vehicles every year. If your vehicle is over five years old, we also carry out an extra check around six months after your annual test.
We may invite you for a random test. If we do, you must attend.
- we will contact you with a date and time
- if you cannot attend, contact Fleet Services in Blantyre to rearrange
- if you miss a test without telling us, we may suspend your licence
If your vehicle passes its annual test, we will give you a certificate of compliance for the next year.
Vehicle age rules
- your vehicle must be under five years old when you first license it
- if it is not a purpose-built taxi, you must replace it after 10 years
- purpose-built hackney vehicles have no age limit, but they must pass all tests
Licence conditions
Your licence includes conditions you must follow at all times. You will find these on your paper licence.
