Trees - arboriculture and preservation orders
Tree preservation orders
A TPO is made by the Local Authority under Scottish law to preserve trees in the interest of amenity and/or trees, groups of trees or woodlands of cultural or historic significance.
TPOs can protect single trees or groups of trees.
For more details and guidance on Tree Preservation Orders and trees in conservation areas, see Planning Circular 1/2011: tree preservation orders on gov.scot. This explains the legal process and rules around TPOs.
Find out if a tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order
If you want to remove or trim a tree, check with our Planning and Building Standards Office first to see if the tree has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO).
If a TPO applies, the arboriculture team will visit the site and advise whether your planned work is allowed. If you live in a conservation area, you must give your local planning office six weeks’ notice before pruning or cutting down any trees. There is no fee for a tree preservation order.
How to request a Tree Preservation Order
If you think a tree or group of trees should be covered by a Tree Preservation Order, contact the Planning and Building Standards office. Tell them where the trees are and why you believe they would qualify for designation as a TPO, based on the guidance in Planning Circular 1/2011: tree preservation orders. We will then review your suggestion.

We have maps showing Tree Preservation Orders in South Lanarkshire that are valid and legally enforceable, but the list is currently not complete and is undergoing review.
Some TPOs are highlighted on the maps to help you identify them, especially where they overlap with others. Only the TPOs listed under the headings below are valid. Any other TPO’s you see on these maps may not be valid, so please check the lists. For other TPO enquiries please contact Planning and Building Standards Headquarters for more information.
These maps have been digitised from original paper plans. They are not official legal documents.
