Worried about food
If you’re worried about getting enough food or struggling with the cost of essentials, there are several types of support available from the community, the council and the Scottish Government. This page explains the options and where to get help quickly.
If you need to speak to someone, call our Community Wellbeing Helpline: 0300 029 0041.
Community food organisations and food banks
Across South Lanarkshire, community food groups can help with:
- food parcels
- low‑cost food through food co‑ops and larders
- essentials like toiletries, sanitary products and cleaning items
- community cafés and lunch clubs
Use our community food organisations map to find support near you.
Some organisations may ask for a referral from a support worker, social worker, health visitor or a voluntary sector worker.
You can also look at voluntary and third sector organisations for wider support
Free school meals
Free school meals can save your family around £323 a year.
If you already receive Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction from us, you do not need to apply - we award free school meals automatically if you’re eligible.
If you’re not sure whether you qualify, check the free school meals eligibility criteria or speak to your child’s school.
