Enrolling your child for school
Children normally start school in August if their 5th birthday falls before 1 March of the following year.
If your child attends the nursery of your catchment school don't assume that they will be automatically transferred. You must register them as normal.
It’s only the parent the child ordinarily stays with who is authorised to register them, this includes the guardian or any person who is liable to maintain or has parental responsibilities. For more information see the Children (Scotland) Act 1995.
Pupil enrolment during the summer holiday period
If you want to enrol your child during the summer holidays, you should complete an online registration. An admissions review will take place a few days before the start of the new August term. Someone will then be in touch to confirm if a space is available for you at your catchment school.
Catchment school
You must identify the catchment school for your permanent home address by using the school catchment checker. This will show you information on your denominational and non-denominational catchment schools for primary and secondary. If you have any difficulty in identifying your catchment school please email us at edsuppserv.helpline@southlanarkshire.gov.uk.
Enrol online
To register your child for school you should complete our online Primary school registration form by selecting the ‘Enrol my child’ button below. The link to the online form will be given once you have searched for your address – please ensure that you select the ‘online form’ link for the correct catchment school. Please note that a registration is required for each child (for example, twins require a registration each).
Submit your documents online
You need to upload the following documents during the registration process so please ensure you have them ready when you start the online form:
- each child's full birth certificate
- two pieces of recent official documentation each containing your permanent home address for example a utility bill, council tax statement, housing rent card, child benefit documentation. Proof of where the child lives may also be needed.
Documents must be no more than 5MB each and preferably in .jpg or .pdf format – if your combined file size is larger than 25MB your registration form may not be received by your catchment school.
Placing requests
If you don’t want your child to attend their catchment primary school, you must still register them at the catchment school before making a placing request. Please read our page on placing requests for further information.
Early entry
If your child's birthday is after 1 March, you can still apply to have them admitted early, please read our page on early entry to school.
Deferred entry
If you want your child to have an additional year at nursery, please read our page on deferred entry to school.
