Gaelic Medium Education in South Lanarkshire
We offer Gaelic Medium Education (GME) for children and young people aged 3 to 18. This includes nursery, primary and secondary education, where learning takes place mainly through the Gaelic language.
Our GME provision currently includes:
- Gaelic Early Learning and Childcare (ELC)
- Gaelic Medium Primary Education (GMPE) at Mount Cameron Primary School
- Gaelic Medium Secondary Education (GMSE) at Calderglen High School
We continue to explore ways to expand Gaelic‑medium subjects and Gaelic Learner Education (GLE) at secondary level.
Nursery and primary education
Mount Cameron Primary School in East Kilbride offers Gaelic Medium Education from nursery through to Primary 7.
- In nursery and Primary 1 to Primary 3, children learn through full Gaelic immersion
- From Primary 4, English is gradually introduced, while Gaelic remains the main language used in the classroom
Our Gaelic Medium Primary Education follows:
- Curriculum for Excellence
- the Literacy and Gàidhlig framework
- Statutory Guidance for Gaelic Education
This approach supports children to become confident bilingual learners.
