Rutherglen Ladies FC on show
Published: Wednesday 15 February 2023
Women’s football is thought to be a modern development but they have been playing the beautiful game for more than 100 years.
Recent research has uncovered the forgotten story of Rutherglen Ladies FC and its battle against the odds just to play matches, as attitudes towards women’s football became increasingly hostile.
This exhibition tells the story of the team from its foundation in 1921 to disbandment in 1939.
The club really were trailblazers of the 1920s, defying bans to promote women’s football across Scotland as they took on teams from Troon to Fraserburgh.
So why not come along and explore the lives of manager J.H. Kelly and the players and follow their ground-breaking tours across Scotland, England and Ireland.
The exhibition is on at Low Parks Museum in Hamilton until 12 March 2023.
