Schools across South Lanarkshire had a special themed lunch this week to mark the Coronation of King Charles III.

Muiredge Primary School in Uddingston were among the schools taking part, with the aim of the day to encourage more pupils to have a balanced, healthy lunch.

The school was decked out in bunting and other decorations, and as well as the themed lunch there were helpings of the Coronation quiche for pupils to try.

A special Union Flag fruit platter was also assembled for the occasion.

Chair of the council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor Robert Brown, said: “The children at Muiredge Primary School were superb and were all keen to show me the crowns and decorations they had made.

“The staff had clearly made a huge effort to make this a memorable event for the pupils.

“The Coronation theme was the lever today but there is another serious message behind it too.

“Encouraging our young people to have a healthy, balanced meal is of course the main aim of events like this.”

Head Teacher Leigh Miller said: “The pupils were all so excited for the themed lunch and some of the crowns they had made in class were fantastic.

“They have been learning about the coronation and have shown a real interest in the history and sense of occasion it brings.

“We generally have a really good uptake of school lunches and days like today can only help to encourage even more to see the benefits.

“I would like to thank our wonderful kitchen staff who went above and beyond, and also the wider facilities team who came up with the idea of having a theme day for the Coronation.”
