A campaign to help people across South Lanarkshire to engage in a more active lifestyle has been launched.

The Think, Move, Breathe campaign also helps people living, working and studying in the area improve air quality by choosing to leave the car at home.

Think, Move, Breathe is run on the free-to-download BetterPoints app, which allows users to easily record their walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport trips.

These trips earn BetterPoints, which can be spent at participating local businesses, online, at the supermarket or used can donate their points to local charities including Kilbryde Hospice.

As well as BetterPoints, participants can earn BetterTicket prize draw entries for national prizes and dedicated local draws for local events like the one for the recent Calderglen Family Run of Colour.

Travelling sustainably to featured local events also gains extra points, for example users can gain an extra 150 BetterPoints for arriving at Chatelherault and Calderglen Country Parks on foot, by bike, or using public transport. Please note points are only available to those over the age of 14.

In July, there will be daily prize draws for walking/wheeling, cycling and using public transport. This is to encourage participants to think about how they get around and try different ways of making shorter trips. If you can cycle to the station, take the train and then walk to work at the other end, you can enter all three prize draws that day.

Mary Todd, who cycles and is using the app, said: “I cycle to work principally as I find it immensely enjoyable.

“It helps me prepare for my workday and relax me afterwards. Added benefits are helping my fitness, fresh air and beautiful scenery along the Clyde. Another benefit is I can rely on myself and not other timetables,”

Tracy Chambers also cycles to work. She said “I cycle to work because I don't get caught in traffic and I can pick a more scenic route along the Clydeside. It helps to start my day feeling great, seeing the birds and beautiful wildflowers.”

Michael Carey, who walks to work and joined the campaign, said: “I always used the car to go to work, I had been trying to go running or walking once I got home but didn’t always have the time.

“When I saw the Think, Move, Breathe campaign and learned that I could gain points and rewards by downloading the BetterPoints app it gave me the push that I needed.

“By leaving the car at home and walking to work I am enjoying listening to my music while walking and I no longer get caught up with any traffic, I am also saving money on fuel too.  I have noticed in just a few weeks how my fitness levels have increased and I am enjoying the fresh air before starting and ending my day.”

It's easy to download the app and join in the fun.
