The council has been shortlisted in four categories for the Chartered Institute of Housing’s (CIH) Scotland Housing Awards 2023.

Housing and Technical Resources have been shortlisted in the ‘Working in Partnership’ category for delivering supported accommodation for Ukrainian refugees at the site of the former student accommodation in Barrack Street, Hamilton. This innovative project, funded by the Scottish Government, was delivered in partnership with the Salvation Army.

One resident said: “Barrack Street is my sanctuary and I can start living again. Having the ability to be able to talk and receive support from the council and Salvation Army whenever I need comfort of being with other people is very much appreciated.”

The second nomination for ‘Excellence in Tenant Scrutiny’, recognises the efforts of the Customer Scrutiny Group, comprising a core of customers who work in partnership with the council to undertake scrutiny activities to enhance the development and delivery of housing services.

During 2022/23, the Customer Scrutiny Group reviewed the council’s approach to gas servicing and tenant safety, culminating in a report detailing findings and recommendations from the exercise which was presented to the Resource Management Team.  An action plan highlighting key areas for improvement is being progressed.

Stephen Gibson, Executive Director, Housing and Technical Resources said: “I fully appreciate the group’s commitment and attention to detail demonstrated throughout this exercise. Customer scrutiny is important to the council and helps to inform the further development and delivery of services.”

The third nomination for ‘Young Achiever in Housing’ recognises the valuable role played by Daniel Cairns, a Housing Assistant within the Homeless Access and Assessment Service, who has shown creativity and innovation in finding solutions for households presenting to the council as homeless.  Daniel has also proved to be a great role model for new members of the team, helping them to build skills and confidence in their roles.

One colleague said: “Daniel is always very helpful, using his initiative to solve problems and find a solution. Nothing is too much trouble for Daniel, he recently went above and beyond to assist a wheelchair user find accommodation in an emergency, requiring him to stay on late until arrangements were in place.”

The fourth and final nomination for the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ recognises the outstanding contribution made by Annette Finnan, the council’s former Head of Housing Services who retired earlier this year.

Improving the life chances of those in housing need were at the heart of Annette’s drive and commitment to reduce inequalities and promote best practice across all areas of housing and homelessness.

Jean Ramage, customer representative, said: “Over the years I have known Annette, she has inspired and encouraged tenants and other customers to become involved in customer participation.  Annette actively supported customer groups to strengthen relationships with the council by working together to develop housing policies and services.”

The winners of the CIH Scotland Housing Awards 2023 will be announced at a special ceremony to be held in the Radisson Blu hotel in Glasgow on Friday 27 October 2023.
