Quarry Street to open up to vehicles
Published: Thursday 25 January 2024

A pedestrianised section of Hamilton Town centre is to open to vehicles on a trial basis.
This has been developed following discussions with Hamilton Business Improvement District (also known as Hamilton Our Town).
Quarry Street will also benefit from free parking for 30 minutes within marked areas between 9.30am and 4pm.
The parking zone will be marked with signage. Vehicles must not park out with the marked parking zone area including delivery vehicles.
The trial will begin from 1 February, and vehicles will also be able to use the existing bays on Cadzow Street (between Leechlee Road and Townhead Street), and the bay on Townhead Street for free 30-minute parking between 9.30am and 4pm.
Chair of the council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor Robert Brown, said: “The reason for this change is to help support the businesses located in this area with easier vehicle access on a trial basis.
“It means that Quarry Street will not be pedestrianised from 1 February for a trial period of up to 18 months. Cadzow Street will also open up to vehicles during this period.
“Following the trial period, we will evaluate how it has gone, before making any decision on the long-term viability of the project.”
Hamilton Our Town Manager Malcolm Thomas-Harley said: “We support any positive actions that benefit our local businesses and community, especially given the ongoing challenges.
“We hope that the provision of improved access through this initiative provides not only an economic boost for the businesses, but also an improved visitor experience within our town centre.
“Over the trial period, we will be monitoring footfall alongside engaging with the business community to measure its impact, ahead of permanent changes or further proposals.”
Keith Street will only be accessible from Cadzow Street by public transport vehicles with access not permitted to private vehicles.
