Junction improvements continue from Monday
Published: Friday 8 March 2024

Improvements to a major junction of the M74 will continue next week.
The next phase of the £1.5m junction traffic signal scheme at A72/M74 junction 7 will mean that it is necessary to close part of Duke Street for certain periods from Monday to Friday.
From 9.30am to 3.30pm between Monday 11 March and Friday 15 March, no traffic from Larkhall can exit onto the A72 from Duke Street.
However, the M74 slip roads and traffic turning onto Duke Street towards Larkhall from the A72 will operate as normal.
The closure is necessary to allow the works to take place on the existing carriageways in a manner which protects the travelling public and site operatives.
Work on the project began in January of this year, with major landscaping, carriageway widening, drainage and kerbing works already completed in preparation for two planned road closures.
A second closure will take place between Sunday 7 April and Sunday 14 April and will close the A72 between the M74 on ramp and the M74 off ramp. This closure will be in effect 24 hours a day. During this closure access from Duke Street onto the M74 will be maintained but there will be no access from the M74 to Duke Street.
Both closures will have signed diversion routes in place for their duration.
Colin Park, Head of Roads, Transportation and Fleet Services, explained: “Unfortunately, there are areas where the carriageway is insufficiently wide to enable us to maintain vehicular access and keep the workforce safe.
“We fully appreciate the inconvenience and frustration road closures can cause, and we thank motorists, residents and businesses in advance for their patience and cooperation. As ever we would ask motorists in the area to plan ahead and build in additional journey time.”
