Challenging ageism on day of action
Published: Wednesday 20 March 2024

Today is Age Without Limits Action Day.
It’s an annual day for individuals and communities, workplaces, friends and families to learn, take action and change the way we think about ageing.
The day is supported by Seniors Together in South Lanarkshire, who provide a collective voice for older people.
And South Lanarkshire Council were recently recognised as the first Age Friendly Community in Scotland by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Council Leader and chair of the Community Planning Partnership Board, Joe Fagan, said: “We are determined to make South Lanarkshire a great place to grow older.
“Recognising annual events such as Age Without Limits helps us on that journey, as we are aware ageism is the most prevalent form of discrimination in the UK.
“The development of an Age Friendly Community means that the council and its partners will work with older people to design services and facilities that best suits their needs and aspirations.”
The theme of this year’s Age Without Limits Action Day is See and be Seen.
South Lanarkshire Council’s Older People’s Champion, Councillor Eileen Logan, said: “Through Seniors Together, we have been doing a lot of work over the years to challenge ageist stereotyping.
“We will continue to do that – whether it is challenging language that portrays older people in a negative light, or promoting the wonderful range of activities that Seniors Together organise for our older people.
“We know how important a role older people have to play in society, at work and in family life – so let’s continue to celebrate older people in South Lanarkshire and everything they do.”
