Eastfield Community Centre Management Committee is purchasing the community centre at a discounted rate, allowing them to continue with activities that take place at the centre.

Following a review of its business plan, the South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Board announced that it could not sustain service delivery from the facility and control was returned to the council.

Eastfield Community Centre Management Committee took over the running of the hall on an initial lease, and their application for a subsequent Community Asset Transfer (CAT) was unanimously agreed. Money from the £1m Community Fightback Fund kept Eastfield and other halls open while CATs were progressed.

Chairman of the committee Brian Loch said: “The Eastfield Community Centre Trustees are pleased to announce their success in the undertaking of their Community Asset Transfer which is now well underway.

“It cannot be understated that we are extremely grateful to the community at large in Eastfield and surrounding areas for their overwhelming support for our petition to keep the doors open, and their consistent commitment in actually using the centre, that opens its doors to hundreds of people every week.

“Also, we are grateful to our faithful advisors and of our professional partners that assisted us in navigating the process.

“The Eastfield Community Centre has been the hub of our community for over 40 years and for many it is a lifeline, especially post-covid and has been instrumental to helping people forge new friendships, get involved with others, learn new skill and have a chat and a laugh. Hopefully, our centre will have a bright future and continue to serve the people of our community for many generations to come.”

Chair of the council’s Housing and Technical Resources Committee, Councillor Davie McLachlan, said: “It’s great news that such a well-used and well-known facility will still be available for the local community to use.

“I am sure the Eastfield Community Centre Management Committee will ensure the hall thrives for many years to come.”
