Keeping safe whilst staying mobile
Published: Monday 2 June 2025

The number of tenants purchasing scooters to aid their mobility and help maintain their independence has been increasing.
While mobility scooters can greatly support people to maintain an independent life, it is important that they are stored and charged in as safe a manner as possible.
The Scottish Governments ‘Practical Fire Safety Guidance for Specialised Housing’ prohibits the council in allowing the storing and charging of mobility scooters in communal areas
Do’s and Don’t’s:
- Do consider safe, accessible storage options that do not put you, your neighbours or others at risk.
- Don’t store your scooter in any designated fire escape or evacuation routes. If it’s stored in your own property, make sure it doesn’t block access.
- If you can, store and secure the scooter in a purpose-built internal storage room or in your own accommodation. Alternatively, it can be stored outdoors
- Do follow the manufacturer’s instructions when charging, don’t charge your battery overnight and always unplug your charger when it’s finished charging
- Do buy scooters, chargers and batteries from reputable retailers and make sure they meet your needs and the storage space available
- If your battery or charger shows any signs of damage, replace it immediately as damaged chargers can overheat and catch fire
Fires involving the batteries of mobility scooters can spread quickly and are difficult to put out. In the event of a fire involving these the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service advise that you should not attempt to extinguish the fire yourself but call 999 immediately.
If you have any questions about the storage of mobility scooters, speak to your local Housing Officer or Sheltered Housing Officer.
