Older People’s Assembly challenges ageism
Published: Wednesday 2 July 2025
A South Lanarkshire event to celebrate older people and challenge ageism took place recently.
The first South Lanarkshire Older People’s Assembly of the year was held in Rutherglen Town Hall.
Attendees listened to talks from Age Friendly South Lanarkshire, the Shut Out Scammers initiative and South Lanarkshire Libraries.
They also took part in a ‘Challenge Ageism’ quiz, raffle, and exercise break before enjoying lunch at the end of the event.
The event was held to mark Age Without Limits Day which takes place on June 11 annually.
The day aims to end age-based discrimination by inspiring people to come together and take action.
2025 marks the second year in which South Lanarkshire Council have honoured Age Without Limits Day.
Councillor Eileen Logan, South Lanarkshire Council’s Older People’s Champion, said: “The event was a great success and was just another highlight in Seniors Together already busy year.
“This is a time to challenge ageism and call out people who use ageist language and behaviour.”
South Lanarkshire Council was recognised as the first Age Friendly Community in Scotland two years ago in March 2023.
Chair of Seniors Together, Catriona Mason, said: “An Age Friendly Community is one in which people of all ages can actively participate in community activities and where everyone is treated with respect, regardless of their age.
“It is a place that makes it easy for older people to stay connected to people that are important to them, and it helps people stay healthy and active even at the oldest ages and provides appropriate support to those who can no longer look after themselves.”
Seniors Together aims to improve the quality of life for older people living in South Lanarkshire.
