Local Action Fund to help local communities

Access to recreation facilities in the Murray and Westwood will be improved with a £50,000 boost from the Local Action Fund.
Local councillors representing East Kilbride Central South propose to spend £30,000 of the cash resurfacing the road up to Murray Bowling Club, with the remaining £20,000 being spent to provide accessible play equipment in Westwood playpark.
Funding for the investment is a result of the administration budget passed by the council earlier this year, with an additional £50,000 allocated to each of the 20 council wards.
Councillors in each ward were asked to come up with proposals for how the new Local Action Fund should be spent, with final decisions to be taken by the Executive Committee.
The first proposals were unanimously agreed at the most recent meeting in June.
Council Leader Joe Fagan said: “The Local Action Fund is designed to help each community with projects that might not cost a lot of money but can have a lasting and worthwhile impact for everyone who lives there.
“We know that local councillors hear first-hand from their constituents where money could be best spent, and their proposals mean that we already have agreement in 13 of the 20 council wards, with the others to follow in due course.
“The projects in East Kilbride Central South have been specifically chosen to widen access to leisure spaces and venues for as many as possible in the local community, which goes to the very heart of what the fund is all about.”
The additional funding for play equipment will be incorporated into the existing programme for East Kilbride in this financial year.
The elected members for East Kilbride East, Ward 7, are Councillor John Anderson, Councillor Gerry Convery and Councillor Elaine McDougall.
