Council backs World Breastfeeding Awareness Week
Published: Thursday 7 August 2025
South Lanarkshire Council is proud to support World Breastfeeding Awareness Week.
The week takes place every year from 1 to 7 August.
The council recently agreed a Breastfeeding and Return to Work Policy, which means council employees will be given support to continue breastfeeding when they return to work.
The Breastfeeding and Return to Work policy builds on the council signing up to the Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland Scheme last year.
The council’s Chief Executive Paul Manning said: “We recognise that breastfeeding is the optimal infant feeding choice.
“By signing up to the Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland Scheme, we showed our commitment to our public places being somewhere that mums are not just welcome, but know they are welcome and can feed their babies in a comfortable and supportive environment.
“The new policy will help encourage a supportive workplace culture for breastfeeding employees.”
World Breastfeeding Awareness Week highlights the benefits of breastfeeding for both babies and mothers and provides an important opportunity to reaffirm the council’s commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive workplace for all employees.
