A celebration of Age Friendly South Lanarkshire
Published: Friday 7 November 2025
Older people and professionals from across South Lanarkshire took part in a vibrant and inspiring event dedicated to aging well, lifelong learning and community connection.
Seniors Together: Living Well in Later Life conference took place at the Town House in Hamilton and was delivered in partnership with South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC).
SLLC ran in parallel the ‘Retired or Thinking of Retiring?’ taster workshop program both in the Town House and in Low Parks Museum.
Council Leader Joe Fagan said: “The event was a resounding success, reflecting the strength of community spirit and the shared commitment to making South Lanarkshire a great place to grow older.
“It highlights our commitment to supporting older residents in an Age Friendly Community.”
The Older People's Champion for South Lanarkshire Council, Councillor Eileen Logan, said: “We had a diverse programme of speakers and interactive sessions designed to empower attendees with knowledge, tools, and opportunities to thrive in later life.
“A standout session came from the St Andrews Dementia Hub in Carluke, who guided delegates through the journey of dementia — from awareness to acceptance and adaptation — offering heartfelt insights and practical advice.”
There was also an engaging and interactive session led by Professor Alan Gow from Heriot-Watt University.
His “Brain Roulette” activity brought brain health to life, demonstrating how small, everyday actions can make a big difference in maintaining cognitive wellbeing.
The wealth of resources available to older adults from SLLC — from creative workshops to lifelong learning opportunities — was also showcased, encouraging everyone to explore new interests and hobbies.
Martin Stepek, renowned for his work in mindfulness, led a calming and reflective session introducing the practice as a tool for wellbeing in later life.
