Apply now for nursery places
Published: Thursday 15 January 2026
Parents across South Lanarkshire are being urged to apply early for nursery places to secure their first choice.
Applications for nursery are open all year, but most places are allocated at the beginning of the school year.
Parents and carers are being encouraged to submit their applications by 28 February 2026 to maximise their chance of securing their preferred Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) setting for the August start.
Applying by the February deadline ensures families are considered in the first round of allocations, giving the best opportunity to secure their first choice.
Chair of the Council’s Education Resources Committee, Councillor Lynsey Hamilton, said: “Early Learning and Childcare is a vital part of a child’s development.
“Applying by the end of February gives families the best chance of securing their preferred nursery and helps us plan resources to deliver high-quality, flexible and accessible provision. We strongly encourage parents to apply as soon as possible.”
Additional guidance on eligibility, funded hours, and support for children with additional needs is available on the council’s website.
Most places are filled for the August start during initial allocations and late applications will only be considered after these allocations and may result in limited choice.
Early applications help the council plan effectively and maintain high-quality provision across the 89 ELC establishments and 98 funded partner providers.
All ELC settings follow the Scottish Government’s Curriculum for Excellence and national guidance such as Realising the Ambition and Together We Can and We Will. This approach focuses on play-based learning, health and wellbeing, communication and creativity, ensuring every child has the best start in life.
