More council homes on the way

New council homes are to be purchased at a development in Almada Street, Hamilton.
The council is intending to purchase 36 homes from Keepmoat Homes at the site of the former University of the West of Scotland in the town.
The mix of houses across the site consists of two- and three-bedroom terraced houses, four-bedroom semi-detached houses and one- and two-bedroom flats. It is anticipated that these houses will be complete in 2027/2028.
More than £8.8 million will be invested in the properties, which reinforces commitments given in the Local Housing Strategy and Strategic Housing Investment Plan to develop affordable housing across South Lanarkshire to both meet increasing housing need and support social and economic regeneration.
The Chair of the council’s Housing and Technical Resources Committee, Councillor Davie McLachlan, said: “These homes are a welcome addition to the council’s housing stock and meet the varying needs of people across Hamilton.
“We are determined to provide residents across the area with high-quality homes, and this is just one of the ways in which we will deliver them.”
Acquisition of the properties is being finalised with Keepmoat Homes, with funding also to be sought from the Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme to reduce the overall cost to the council.
Planning permission for the development, which comprises 122 homes and 20 flats, was given approval at the Planning Committee this week, subject to the conclusion of legal agreements that, in addition to the new council housing, will also secure funding for investment into local educational facilities.
