School expansions approved in Hamilton and East Kilbride
Published: Friday 13 February 2026
Pupil capacity at two secondary schools in South Lanarkshire is to increase thanks to a combined £18 million investment.
Holy Cross High School in Hamilton and St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School in East Kilbride will see increases to the number of pupils able to attend both schools, pending approval of funding from the Glasgow City Region City Deal.
At Holy Cross, internal adaptations to the existing school have been identified that could provide additional teaching accommodation for up to 145 pupils. A proposed new build extension will further increase the capacity to 1,652 pupils.
At St Andrew’s and St Bride’s, internal adaptations to the existing school have been identified that could provide additional teaching accommodation for up to 69 pupils. A proposed new build extension will further increase the capacity to 1,721 pupils.
The expansions are expected to be completed by 2028 and are part of wider plans for the Larkhall Community Growth Area and East Kilbride Community Growth Area.
Council Leader Joe Fagan said: “Everyone in South Lanarkshire should be proud that we have arguably the best school estate in Europe.
“The success of the Community Growth Areas has seen more and more people choosing to make South Lanarkshire their home, and with that of course we need additional space in some of our schools.
“The expansions to Holy Cross and St Andrew’s and St Bride’s are an example of our commitment to ensuring young people across the area continue to learn in modern, state-of-the-art buildings which help them thrive and achieve their potential.”
