Walking group can step into the future with confidence

A walking group in Larkhall that offers a valuable chance to socialise as well as exercise will continue its trips thanks to support through the Community Wish List.
The group has had its activities secured well into the future after major heating-network supplier Switch2 stepped in to provide much-needed support.
Larkhall and District Volunteer Group (LDVG) runs the walking group as part of its work to reduce physical and social isolation and increase health and wellbeing for adults.
Its 96 volunteers provide a range of inclusive and accessible services and activities for the 360 members. As well as the walking group, they run lunch clubs, a host of activity groups, an armed-forces community group, a Thursday night social group, strength and balance exercise classes, community transport and a free handyperson service.
A funding shortfall had placed strain on the charity to continue with some services but they received a welcome boost when Switch2, who provide heat networks to local authorities, housing associations and private developers, offered to cover the cost of 25 of the clubs walks.
Sandra McCrory, CEO of LDVG, said: “This contribution to the Walking Group from Switch2 makes a real and invaluable difference to many older people in our community. We hear from members of the Walking Group about what it means to them, from making friends and creating memories, to keeping active and to visiting places that many of them wouldn’t be able to travel to without the minibus we provide for the trips.
“The sponsoring of 25 walks by Switch2 has guaranteed that this popular activity – and all these vital benefits for the members – will continue well into the future, and we are incredibly grateful for it.”
Cathy Olphon, Sustainability Manager at Switch2, said: “At Switch2, we're passionate about making a difference in the communities where we work. Through working with South Lanarkshire Council, we are able to connect with some amazing community organisations who are making an impact every day, and Larkhall & District Volunteering Group is a prime example.
“We are so pleased to be able to support the great work done by the charity through this sponsorship of the 25 walks. It is initiatives like this that bring people together and keep communities going."
The Community Wish List is supported by South Lanarkshire Council’s Community Engagement Team.
Jackie Taylor, Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Resources at South Lanarkshire Council, said: "This is another great example of the Community Wish List and the benefits it can bring to local people and organisations.
"I would like to thank Switch2 for this generous donation to such a worthy local cause, and I’m delighted that it will secure the future of something as important as the Walking Group."
