Keeping you safe - managing Lithium‑ion batteries
Published: Monday 22 June 2026
Fires caused by lithium‑ion batteries are increasing.
These batteries are often found in mobile phones, laptops, vapes, as well as e‑bikes, e‑scooters and mobility scooters. Using and storing these batteries safely is essential to reduce the risk of fire, which can cause severe damage and put lives at risk.
To reduce risk, avoid storing e‑bikes, e‑scooters, and mobility scooters in escape routes such as hallways, stairwells, or communal areas. Store them in a cool, dry location away from extreme temperatures, follow the manufacturer’s guidance and avoid overcharging.
Safety tips from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service
- Never use damaged chargers
- Avoid buying cheap or incompatible chargers online
- Do not charge devices while sleeping or away from home
- Never charge or store devices on a bed
- Be aware that dropped or damaged batteries may catch fire or explode
Lithium‑ion batteries and vapes must not be placed in household waste, recycling bins or public litter bins, as they pose a serious fire risk and can ignite when crushed. They can be recycled free of charge at council Household Waste and Recycling Centres or participating retailers.
