Bins - what goes in them
What you can put in your burgundy bin
Your burgundy bin is for food waste and, with a permit, garden waste. Please keep the lid fully closed on collection day. We cannot empty bins with open lids, extra bags or additional waste beside the bin. If you have more waste than fits in your bin, you can take it to one of our household waste and recycling centres.
Food waste liners for your kitchen caddy must be compostable and 7 litres in size. You can buy them in most supermarkets, discount stores or online.
Food waste you can recycle
All cooked and uncooked food can go in your kitchen caddy and burgundy bin, including:
- dairy products that are not liquid
- meat and bones
- eggs and eggshells
- fruit and vegetables, including peelings
- bread and cakes
- fish, including bones and shells
- rice and pasta
- tea bags and coffee grounds
- natural cork
Garden waste you can recycle (permit required)
You can put these items in your burgundy bin with a valid permit:
- grass and hedge clippings
- flowers, plants and weeds
- leaves
- untreated or uncoloured bark and small branches
Items that must not go in your burgundy bin
Do not put the following in your bin:
- liquids or oils
- spent grain from home brewing
- soil, rubble, bricks or timber
- animal waste or pet bedding
- glass
- hay
- plastic bags or packaging
- turf
- wood shavings
- packaging made from sheep’s wool (not yet approved for composting)
Large garden waste, such as tree trunks or big branches, should be taken to a household waste and recycling centre.
Keeping your bin clean
Your kitchen caddy has a lockable lid to help prevent smells. To avoid maggots in your bin, scrape food into your caddy quickly and keep both the caddy and bin lids closed.
If your bin has been tagged
If your burgundy bin has a tag, we will not empty it. You can read more on why your bin has been tagged.
