Tom and Marion Hill celebrating Diamond Wedding Anniversary with guest Deputy Lieutenant Andrew Braidwood

Globetrotting couple Tom and Marion Hill have set sail on a cruise on the high seas to celebrate 60 years of marriage.

But before they embarked, they had a wonderful celebration on land at their home in Hamilton.

Tom Hill, who was born and brought up in the Knightswood area of Glasgow and Marion Meikle who grew up in Hamilton, were both born in 1937.

The couple first met in 1962 in the Majestic in Glasgow. That night Tom went home and told his mum he had met the girl he was going to marry.

They were engaged a year later in the Chantinghall Hotel and got married six months later in Cadzow Parish Church on 16 October 1963.

They went on honeymoon to the Peebles Hydro.

The couple bought their first house in Bearsden before moving to Hamilton. They also had a holiday flat in Millport.

Marion worked as a secretary at Hamilton Teacher Training College before becoming Head Secretary at Hamilton Police station.

Tom worked in Rolls Royce for 42 years initially in Hillington then East Kilbride.

They had two children, Morag who was born in 1967 and Craig in 1971.

They were keen ramblers in their younger days as well as hobbies and interests including gardening, wildlife and animals.

And the globetrotting couple have travelled extensively over the years, from Borneo and Canada to New Zealand and Africa to name but a few.

And to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary they set sail on a cruise they day after their anniversary.

Unfortunately, South Lanarkshire Provost Margaret Cooper was unable to join Tom and Marion to celebrate their anniversary, but Deputy Lieutenant Andrew Braidwood was able to make it along to the party at their home in Hamilton.

If you would like the Provost to attend a Diamond Wedding or 100th birthday please get in touch with the Provost’s Office.
