Report bonfires and keep everyone safe
Published: Friday 1 November 2024
Everyone is being urged to report potentially dangerous bonfires to the council again this year.
Rather than let a fun night end in disaster, our Bonfire removal squads will be out and about in the run up to events taking place across South Lanarkshire, removing bonfires located on council owned land.
And the council also works closely with the fire service and local partner agencies to raise awareness of the risks and dangers associated with bonfires and fireworks.
Our dedicated bonfire ‘hit squads’ are now set up in all four areas across South Lanarkshire ready to dismantle and remove unauthorised bonfires on council land.
And as well as the public letting us know of hazardous sites, council workers out in the community and our Community Wardens mobile CCTV van will also be on the lookout for potential problems right up to Bonfire Night itself.
Councillor Robert Brown, the chair of the council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, said: “Bonfire Night should be a fun night for everyone to enjoy so the council wants to make sure that it is also a safe one again this year.
“So by removing unauthorised bonfires we aim to ensure that potential dangers are removed from the evening’s festivities.
“So please help us by reporting any bonfires being set up on council land in your communities.”
Councillor Brown added: “We urge everyone to attend only well organised, official bonfire events where you can enjoy the bonfires and fireworks safely and enjoyably.”
