Blantyre couple celebrate Diamond Wedding Anniversary
Published: Tuesday 17 June 2025
Agnes and James Walsh have been celebrating 60 years of marriage in the Blantyre home they have lived in for more than 50 years.
And the couple, better known as Nancy and Jim, had a surprise visit and a chat about growing up in Blantyre by two other locals, South Lanarkshire’s Depute Provost Bert Thomson and Deputy Lieutenant for Lanarkshire Alexander (Sandy) Wilkie.
Born and bred in the town, Nancy and Jim met in 1961 and went on their first date in Glasgow. They got engaged in 1963 and married on 12 June 1965 at David Livingstone Memorial Church followed by their wedding reception at the Parkville Hotel.
Their son James (also Jim) was born in 1966 followed by their daughter Shona the following year.
When the family came along Nancy stopped work but when the children went to school, she worked part time at the Hoover in Cambuslang, then Asda in Blantyre before finally becoming a home help with the council until she retired at 60.
Jim worked most of his life with Roberstons of Springwells, laterally moving to Anderson’s Haulage until he eventually retired at 71.
In his younger days Jim was with the TA as a medic and was also a scout leader for many years with the 1st High Blantyre (28th Lanarkshire) Scouts.
They both enjoyed hill walking and holidays abroad, especially their first ever cruise which they fondly remember - after their original booking was cancelled, they sailed around China, Japan and South Korea.
They have two grandchildren, Keri and Kyle. And a great granddaughter Nikita-Mai.
