Household waste and recycling centres
How to book and use our household waste and recycling centres
Our household waste and recycling centres are for South Lanarkshire residents to dispose of household waste and recycling. You must book a visit in advance before arriving at any site.
This page explains how to book, what to expect on site, and where to take specific items.
Book your visit
All vehicles visiting a household waste and recycling centre must book in advance using our online system.
Booking helps manage queues and keeps sites operating safely.
Opening hours and locations
Each site has different opening hours. You can check times and the items accepted for:
Using the sites
Our sites accept household waste from:
- cars and vans up to 3.5 tonnes
- vehicles with trailers
Tipper vehicles are not allowed.
Smoking is not permitted anywhere on site due to fire risk and health concerns.
Cardboard recycling
At East Kilbride, Hamilton and Blantyre, and Cambuslang and Rutherglen, cardboard skips have restricted openings. You must empty and flat‑pack cardboard before placing it in the skip.
This helps reduce contamination and ensures cardboard can be recycled.
Upholstered furniture
From 1 April 2024, we no longer accept mattresses, couches and other upholstered seating at our Larkhall and Strathaven household waste and recycling centres.
This is because UK‑wide rules now require upholstered seating to be collected and disposed of separately. Our smaller sites do not have enough space for the additional dedicated skips needed to do this safely.
You can still take these items to:
- Carluke
- East Kilbride
- Hamilton and Blantyre
- Cambuslang and Rutherglen
You can also arrange a bulk uplift.
Gypsum, plasterboard and asbestos
We accept gypsum and plasterboard in dedicated skips at all sites.
Asbestos is hazardous and can only be disposed of at East Kilbride household waste and recycling centre. See our hazardous waste page for details.
Business and charity waste
Business waste disposal is available at selected sites for a fee.
Charities can dispose of recyclable materials such as metal, wood, cardboard and textiles. Domestic and bulky waste from charities is not accepted.
