Hazardous waste
How to dispose of hazardous waste safely
Some types of waste are hazardous and need special handling to protect people’s health and the environment. This includes items such as asbestos, gas bottles and certain chemicals. This page explains how to dispose of common hazardous items safely and where to get advice.
Asbestos
Asbestos is dangerous and must be handled with extreme care.
If you can do so safely, you should:
- double‑wrap an unbroken rigid sheet of asbestos in plastic sheeting
- seal the package fully with tape
You must take it to the East Kilbride household waste and recycling centre, where there is a dedicated skip. This is the only council site licensed to accept asbestos.
If the asbestos is not sheet material, or if it is damaged or crumbling, you should contact a specialist contractor for advice.
If you are a council tenant and need to dispose of asbestos, please contact your local housing office.
Gas bottles
Gas bottles should usually be returned to the supplier.
Calor Gas will collect its own bottles free of charge. You can contact them on 0800 662 663.
If the supplier is no longer operating, you can take gas bottles to one of our main household waste and recycling centres for safe disposal.
Chemicals and hazardous electrical items
Some electrical and electronic items are classed as hazardous waste. This includes:
- televisions
- computer monitors
- fluorescent tubes
You can take these items to special areas at our household waste and recycling centres. In some cases, you can also arrange a bulk uplift.
