What you need to know before your visit
Our household waste and recycling centres are for South Lanarkshire residents to dispose of household waste and recycling. You must book a visit in advance before arriving at any site.
This page explains how to book, what to expect on site, and where to take specific items.
Book your visit
All vehicles visiting a household waste and recycling centre must book in advance using our online system.
Booking helps manage queues and keeps sites operating safely.
Opening hours and locations
Each site has different opening hours. You can check times and the items accepted for:
Who can use the household waste and recycling centres
- only South Lanarkshire residents can use the sites
- bring proof of address, such as a utility bill or driving licence
- waste from home or garden renovations must not be brought to HWRCs - you need to hire a skip or make your own disposal arrangements
- waste from tradespeople (such as builders or gardeners) is not accepted - they must arrange their own disposal
Booking your visit
- car bookings last 15 minutes
- van bookings last 30 minutes
- if you are late or miss your slot, you may not be allowed in and will need to book again
- each booking is for one trip only - book again if you need to visit more than once
- if you are bringing two vehicles, book a separate slot for each and provide the registration number
- there is no limit on how many times South Lanarkshire residents can book
On‑site rules
- you must have a booking to enter - no entry without one
- our sites accept household waste from cars and vans up to 3.5 tonnes and vehicles with trailers
- only the vehicle you booked will be allowed in
- no tipper vehicles are allowed
- if you are using a hire vehicle, bring the hire agreement
- only two people can get out of the vehicle
- children and pets must stay inside the vehicle at all times
- smoking is not permitted anywhere on site due to fire risk and health concerns
Business and charity waste
Business waste disposal is available at selected sites for a fee.
Charities can dispose of recyclable materials such as metal, wood, cardboard and textiles. Domestic and bulky waste from charities is not accepted.
If you need to dispose of business or commercial waste, see our Commercial collections and tipping vouchers page.
Cardboard recycling
At East Kilbride, Hamilton and Blantyre, and Cambuslang and Rutherglen, cardboard skips have restricted openings. You must empty and flat‑pack cardboard before placing it in the skip.
This helps reduce contamination and ensures cardboard can be recycled.
Upholstered furniture
We no longer accept mattresses, couches and other upholstered seating at our Larkhall and Strathaven household waste and recycling centres.
This is because UK‑wide rules now require upholstered seating to be collected and disposed of separately. Our smaller sites do not have enough space for the additional dedicated skips needed to do this safely.
You can still take these items to:
- Carluke
- East Kilbride
- Hamilton and Blantyre
- Cambuslang and Rutherglen
You can also arrange a bulk uplift.
Gypsum, plasterboard and asbestos
We accept gypsum and plasterboard in dedicated skips at all sites.
Asbestos is hazardous and can only be disposed of at East Kilbride household waste and recycling centre. See our hazardous waste page for details.
