Requirements and application process for public entertainment licence
If you run a venue or organise events that members of the public can attend, you may need a public entertainment licence. This licence helps make sure events are safe and suitable for the public.
You should check whether you need a licence before you open or advertise an event.
When you need a licence
You may need a licence if the public uses your premises or land for activities such as:
- theatres, concert halls or music halls
- dance halls or discos
- skating rinks or swimming pools
- circuses, exhibitions, or events with performing animals, including dog agility shows
- fairgrounds or pleasure parks
- billiard, snooker or pool rooms
- sports centres or sports barns
- trampoline parks, indoors or outdoors
- permanent commercial soft play areas
- bungee jumping
- saunas or sunbeds
- bonfires or firework displays that the public can attend
- outdoor concerts or events, including Christmas grotto‑type events
Some small or community events do not need a licence. For example, charity events with no entry charge, or gala days with no more than two children’s rides.

If you already hold a licence, you can also use this service to apply to change the terms of your existing licence.
How to apply
Once you submit your application, we will process it and keep you informed.
What happens after you apply
After we receive your application:
- there is a 28 day objection period
- we send a copy of your application to Police Scotland for comments or objections
If you have not heard from us within 28 days, contact the Licensing and Registration office and we will update you on progress.
Collecting your licence
When your licence is ready, you must bring proof of identification to collect your documents.
If someone else is collecting them for you, they must bring:
- something in writing from you giving permission
- their own identification
The signature must match the signature on your application form. We do not accept permission by email.
Licence fee
- Full licence £396.69
- Venues up to 8,000 people per day £1,401.13
- Venues for 8,001 to 15,000 people per day £2,804.57
- Fairs £208.52
Temporary public entertainment licence
If your event is a one-off such as a gala day, a funfair or a concert you need a temporary public entertainment licence and you should contact the Licensing and registration office to get an events application pack.
You will need to send us seven copies of plans showing where the event will take place and proof that you have third-party insurance cover which should include third-party liability cover for at least £5 million.

If you wish to receive notification of any temporary public entertainment events that will be held in your area or a specific area please email licensing@southlanarkshire.gov.uk.
