Registering and voting
You can register to vote if you live in South Lanarkshire and meet the voting requirements. Registering means you can take part in local and national elections and make your voice heard.
Who can register
If you have already registered at your current address, you do not need to do it again. To check your details are on the register (voters' roll), contact the Electoral Registration Office (ERO).
The register is updated at least once a year (usually around 1 December). The annual process (called the canvass) aims to capture everyone eligible, not just current voters.
The electoral register (voters' roll) includes:
- all eligible residents living in the area
- foreign nationals who reside in the area (if they meet eligibility rules)
- young people aged 14 and over (they are invited to register in advance)
How to register
You can register to vote online. It is quick and simple.
You will need:
- your date of birth
- your National Insurance number (if you have one)
If you do not have a National Insurance number, you can still apply.
What happens next
The Electoral Registration Office keeps a list of everyone registered to vote. This is updated every year.
