Asbestos
Asbestos safety and advice
Asbestos is a harmful material that was widely used in buildings between 1950 and 1980. Many homes and businesses may still contain it. You are only at risk if asbestos fibres are released into the air and breathed in. If materials are in good condition and left alone, they are usually safe.
If you think your home contains asbestos, do not disturb it. Do not drill, sand, scrape or remove it yourself. Instead, follow the steps below to keep yourself and others safe.
Where asbestos might be found
You may find asbestos in:
- floor tiles
- textured coatings such as artex
- wall boards and plaster finishes
- pipe insulation and lagging
- water tanks
- boiler cupboard panels
- fuse boxes and electrical boards
- window sill boards
- garage or shed roofing sheets
- gutters and rainwater pipes
