Meeting additional support needs in school

Support for children with additional support needs

We offer a range of educational settings to support children and young people with additional support needs (ASN).

Most children with ASN are supported within mainstream schools. Schools adapt learning and support to meet each child's individual needs, following the principles of Getting It Right for Every Child and Curriculum for Excellence.

Types of support available

The most suitable setting will depend on a child's individual needs. Support may be provided in:

  • mainstream classes
  • specialist departments within mainstream schools
  • specialist schools

Our aim is to ensure every child learns in an environment that best supports their wellbeing, development and educational progress.

Additional support needs classes

Additional support needs classes have:

  • smaller class sizes
  • higher staff-to-pupil ratios
  • tailored learning programmes to meet individual needs

Where appropriate, pupils can also take part in learning and activities alongside their mainstream peers.
