School crossing patrols

Supporting safe road crossings near schools

School crossing patrols help children and adults cross the road safely at set points near schools. They are usually on duty Monday to Friday, before and after the school day, when pupils are travelling to and from school.

Our patrols play an important role in keeping communities safe and supporting families on busy routes.

Where patrols are provided

We decide where to place crossing patrols using approved safety measures. These look at:

  • how many children need to cross
  • how busy the road is
  • the overall safety of the location

This helps us make sure patrols are provided where they are most needed.

Where patrols are not usually provided

We do not normally provide crossing patrols:

  • for secondary school pupils
  • at locations with traffic lights that include pedestrian crossings
  • at roads with light-controlled crossings

These locations already have safety measures in place.
