Byelaws in South Lanarkshire

Current byelaws

This page explains the two byelaws currently in force in the South Lanarkshire Council area and how they may affect you.

Drinking alcohol in public places

You must not drink alcohol or carry an open container of alcohol in certain public areas. These rules apply in 33 designated places across South Lanarkshire.

The byelaws are:

  1. The South Lanarkshire Council Prohibition of consumption of alcohol in designated public spaces Byelaws 2010 which were confirmed on 10 May 2010 and came into operation on 10 June 2010. These byelaws were amended by the following byelaws -
  2. The South Lanarkshire Council Prohibition of consumption of alcohol in designated public spaces (Amendment) Byelaws 2014 which were confirmed on 21 January 2015 and came into operation on Lanimer Day (11 June) 2015.

If you ignore these byelaws, you shall be committing an offence.

You can:

Email licensing@southlanarkshire.gov.uk to request maps or ask questions.

Employment of children

The byelaws are:

  1. Byelaws on the employment of children 2000 which were confirmed on 23 February 2000 and came into operation on 3 March 2000.

These byelaws explain:

  • what types of work children can do
  • the hours they can work
  • when a permit is needed

An employer must apply for permission within one week of a child starting work. This helps ensure their safety and does not affect their education.

You can also read the full employment of children byelaws document online.
