Private landlords - rights and responsibilities

Universal Credit guide for landlords

We’ve shared a simple guide to help landlords and letting agents understand Universal Credit and how it supports tenants to pay rent. You can use it to manage tenancies, reduce arrears and support people to stay in their homes.

What the guide covers

The fact sheet from the Department for Work and Pensions explains:

  • how tenants can get help with rent
  • support available if payments are missed
  • ways to work with tenants receiving benefits

Why it matters

We encourage you to consider each tenant individually. Many people receive housing support, and everyone deserves a safe, secure home.

Take action

Read and share the fact sheet with your networks to help more landlords stay informed.

Note: Support may vary across England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland uses a different system.
