Understanding dementia and planning ahead

If you’re becoming more forgetful, especially over the age of 65, speak to your GP. Occasional memory lapses are common, but if forgetfulness is affecting your daily life or causing worry, early advice and support can help.

Dementia is more common as we get older, and an early diagnosis can help you stay well for longer and plan for the future.

What dementia is

Dementia describes a group of symptoms caused by conditions that affect the brain. These symptoms can include:

  • memory loss
  • slower thinking
  • difficulty planning or concentrating
  • changes in mood or personality
  • problems finding the right words
  • confusion or reduced understanding

People may also lose interest in activities, find social situations harder or struggle to manage everyday tasks. Over time, they may need help from family or friends with decisions and daily routines.

Most types of dementia cannot be cured, but treatments and support can help you stay active and independent.
