Local Transport Strategy 2026-2036
How we plan to improve transport in South Lanarkshire over the next 10 years
We have developed a new Local Transport Strategy (LTS) which sets out how we will plan, manage and invest in transport across South Lanarkshire from 2026 to 2036.
The strategy explains our priorities, the challenges we face and how we will seek to improve the transport network to support residents, communities and businesses.
Our aim is to make it easier to travel, support health and wellbeing, and help meet net zero targets, while maintaining a safe and reliable transport system.
Our vision
Our vision is for a transport network that:
- supports net zero carbon emission targets
- makes it easier to travel by sustainable modes
- is accessible, affordable and well connected
- improves links between urban and rural areas
- supports economic growth and makes South Lanarkshire an attractive place to live, work and visit
- roads and transport infrastructure are safe and well maintained
How we developed the strategy
We worked with residents, elected members and a wide range of organisations to shape the strategy.
Between July and September 2023, we gathered views on key transport issues and opportunities. This feedback helped develop the vision, objectives and measures in the strategy.
In December 2025, we asked for feedback on the draft strategy through an online survey. We shared this with:
- local communities and businesses
- transport providers and neighbouring councils
- community groups and organisations
- health, education and emergency services
- disability and user groups
Delivery and funding
Delivering the strategy will depend on external funding and partnership working. Many projects rely on competitive funding bids and require match funding from the council.
This means the timing and delivery of some improvements will depend on available funding.

The final Local Transport Strategy will be published soon.
