Planning processing agreements
A clear timetable for how your planning application will be handled
A planning processing agreement is a simple project plan that sets out how a planning application will be handled and when each stage will be completed. It helps everyone involved understand what will happen and work to an agreed timetable.
Processing agreements are especially helpful for major or complex applications, where early coordination can make the process quicker and more predictable.
Why use a processing agreement?
A processing agreement can give you:
- clearer timescales and a more predictable process
- faster and better managed decision making
- better communication between you and the council
- earlier input from key consultees and stakeholders
- greater transparency about the steps involved
What the agreement covers
The document sets out each stage of the planning process and who is responsible for delivering it. It usually includes:
- key contacts
- pre‑application discussions
- the information needed to validate and assess your application
- a processing timetable
- consultees and stakeholders involved
- any legal agreements or contributions (if required)
- issuing the decision
- discharge of conditions after approval
We use the Scottish Government’s processing agreement template, which keeps the document clear, straightforward and focused on realistic timescales.
