Self and custom build housing

Building your own home and how we can support you

Self and custom build housing lets you design and build a home that suits your needs. You can create a unique, greener and potentially more affordable home by either building it yourself or working with contractors. These homes are created for your own use, whether you’re an individual, a family or part of a group.

We want to support more self‑build opportunities across South Lanarkshire and can guide you through the process. As part of the Planning (Scotland) Act 2019, we must keep a list of people interested in finding land for self‑build homes. Joining this list helps us understand demand and plan for future opportunities.

Join our self‑build register

If you are thinking about building your own home, please add your name to our self‑build register. This helps us:

  • understand where people would like to build
  • assess demand across different communities
  • plan long‑term options for self‑build plots

Registering does not guarantee that a suitable plot will be found immediately, but it lets us keep you informed and consider your needs when planning future land supply.

You can register using the link at the end of this page. If you have questions or need advice, you can also email us at localplan@southlanarkshire.gov.uk.
