Occasional licence

Apply for an occasional licence

If you want to sell alcohol at a one-off event in an unlicensed venue, you must apply for an occasional licence. This includes events like wedding receptions held in a members’ club for non-members, or events in venues such as halls, barns or marquees.

How to apply for a new licence

Once you submit your application, we will process it and keep you informed.

You must apply at least 28 days before your event.

You can apply if you are:

  • a premises licence holder
  • a personal licence holder
  • a voluntary organisation

What happens after you apply

  • we will publish your application online for 7 days for anyone to send comments or objections
  • share your application with Police Scotland and the Licensing Standards Officer
  • send it to other council services if needed, depending on your event

Plans and supporting information

You may need to provide a layout plan with your application. This applies if your event is in:

  • a barn, marquee or other temporary structure
  • an outdoor area next to licensed premises

Your plan should clearly show:

  • where alcohol will be sold or consumed
  • fire safety equipment
  • emergency lighting
  • any raised stages

You may also need to provide fire safety certificates for marquees.
