Food standards and hygiene
Food law inspections
Inspections are only one part of the service we provide. We much prefer to offer advice and guidance to new businesses before they begin trading. Our aim is to help businesses get things right and keep people safe and healthy.
Responsibilities of food businesses
If you sell food, you are responsible for ensuring that it is safe for consumption. We carry out regular inspections of all local food businesses to maintain high standards and identify areas for improvement.
Support and compliance
A significant proportion of our work involves supporting businesses in complying with food safety legislation. We also provide recommendations on best practices to help businesses operate safely and effectively.
In addition, inspections are undertaken to ensure that food meets the required standards in relation to:
- quality
- composition
- labelling
- advertising
Enforcement
Minor breaches of food law are often dealt with informally. However, more serious violations may result in legal action and, in some cases, could lead to a business being required to close.
