Food safety complaints
Report a food safety problem
If you are worried about the safety or hygiene of food you have eaten or bought, you can report it to us. We investigate food safety problems to help protect public health.
If you find something wrong with food, try not to touch it. Leave it as it is, seal it if you can, and keep it in the freezer where possible. Contact Environmental Services as soon as you can to report the problem.
When you contact us, tell us:
- where and when you bought or ate the food
- what the problem is
- whether you have proof of purchase
- whether anyone else saw what happened
What you can report
You can contact us about food safety concerns, such as:
- food that is off or smells unusual
- food past its use by or best before date
- food that looks contaminated
- alcohol that seems watered down
- missing or unclear food labelling
- being given the wrong type of food, such as meat instead of a vegetarian option
- concerns about cleanliness or hygiene at a food business
If you become ill after eating food
If you are ill after eating food from a business in South Lanarkshire or elsewhere, let us know as soon as possible. We will ask for some details and decide what action to take.
You should also contact your GP straight away, especially if your symptoms are severe or do not improve.
What happens next
We follow up all food safety complaints within two working days. An environmental health officer will keep you informed of the main steps we take and tell you the outcome of the investigation, where possible.
