Car free school zones

How car free school zones work

Car free school zones make streets outside some schools safer at drop-off and pick-up times. Vehicle access near school gates is restricted at the start and end of the school day to help achieve a safer, more pleasant environment for everyone using the streets whilst maintaining access for residents, businesses, pedestrians and cyclists.

If you drive into a zone during its operating times without an exemption, you may receive a £50 fixed penalty notice.

Car free school zones are currently in place at:

  • Burnside Primary School, Rutherglen
  • St Joseph’s Primary School, Blantyre

The zones operate during school term time only.

We are also exploring opportunities to introduce more car free school zones. You can find details of proposed locations in the School Car Free Zones (CFZs) update report presented to our Road Safety Forum

How the zones work

During short periods at the start and end of the school day, streets closest to school entrances are closed to most vehicles. These areas are for pedestrians and cyclists only, with access for exempt vehicles.

Check the signs at each location for exact operating times. Outside these times, roads are open as normal. Police Scotland are able to enforce the restrictions.

Where to park

If you need to drive, please park legally nearby and walk the final part of your journey.

  • St Joseph’s Primary School: Asda Blantyre car park is available at your own risk, with safe crossings on the route to the school
  • Burnside Primary School: Tesco Burnside car park is available at your own risk, with controlled crossings and a pedestrian bridge

Exemptions

Some vehicles can enter during restricted times:

  • residents within the zone can apply for up to two free permits
  • blue badge holders
  • emergency vehicles and contract school transport
  • school staff, where approved

Parents and carers are not eligible for an exemption unless they hold a Blue Badge.
