EDR10 - Financial Savings 2021-22 - Additional behaviour support in secondary schools

EDR10 - Financial Savings 2021-22 - Additional behaviour support in secondary schools | South Lanarkshire Council
TitleEDR10 - Financial Savings 2021-22 - Additional behaviour support in secondary schools
Aims and ObjectivesThe saving will be achieved by removing the provision of dedicated Behavioural Support staff in schools, and the further promotion of a 'whole school' approach to behaviour which will be consistently adopted and implemented by all teaching staff within secondary schools. The whole school approach relates to the implementation of guidance in relation to the Promoting Positive Relationships and Understanding Distressed Behaviour materials.

This targeted support is only established in 6 schools and will ensure consistency of approach in all secondary schools in relation to behaviour management.

Focussing on the whole school approach, and the removal of dedicated Behaviour Support staff, is in line with the approach taken by other councils.

The saving will be part year effect from August 2021. The annual saving equates to £0.165m. A further saving of £0.055m is therefore achievable in 2022/2023.
ConclusionThis option will focus on young people at secondary schools aged 12-18. Support will be provided through pupil support staff in schools and via multi-agencies if required through the staged intervention process. Education Resources also has guidance in place for educational establishments on Promoting Positive Relationships and Understanding Distressed Behaviour. This guidance, developed in partnership with a range of professionals services and bodies, takes account of the latest government research into this aspect of our work, and is designed to support consistent good practice in our schools and services. It is anticipated that this resource and training will help to mitigate any potentially negative impact arising from this saving. Further support for young people with additional support needs will be provided through the increase in ASN staff.
